By Monroe Williamson, Sports Writer
Last Friday the Panthers had a lot to look forward to. They were playing in the Area Round of the 14-4A Division 1 playoffs and the game was being broadcast on live television. The bad weather for the most part stayed away from Bob Shelton Stadium and the Panthers dominated Gonzales early to advance to the regional game against the Rockport-Fulton Pirates.
That game will be played Saturday, November 29 at 1:00 p.m. at Alamo Stadium in San Antonio.
The Panthers dominated early. Liberty Hill scored on all four possessions in the first half and built a 24-0 lead before the Apaches scored in the final seconds of the half to make the score 24-7.
The Panther ground attack totaled 501 yards on 62 carries. Jon Shannon had 26 carries for 240 yards and one touchdown. Nick Hernandez had 10 carries for 95 yards and two touchdowns. Hunter Lindsay had eight carries for 47 yards and two scores. Gage Fulps had four carries for 37 yards and one touchdown. Lucas Rizzotto converted 6-of-6 extra points and had a 25-yard field goal.
The Panther defense held the Apaches ground game to 58 yards on 21 attempts. Gonzales completed 19-of-33 passes for 276 yards and four touchdowns.
Jacob Covington had five solo tackles including two sacks. Christian Anderson and Grant White also recorded five solo tackles. Jason Reeves had four solo tackles and Kalub Foster recorded three.
Liberty Hill took the opening kickoff. They marched 64 yards in six plays and scored on a Lindsay 11-yard run. Their next possession stalled at the Gonzales 8-yard line. Rizzotto kicked a 15-yard field goal to give the Panthers a 10-0 first quarter lead.
The Cats scored on their next possession when Lindsay scored from four yards out with 6:42 left in the half. The extra point was good making the score 17-0.
Liberty Hill forced a Gonzales punt and took over at their 41. Hernandez finished the drive with a 10-yard run with 1:34 left in the half.
The Apaches scored on a 21-yard pass with 17 seconds left. The halftime score was Liberty Hill 24, Gonzales 7.
The third quarter was scoreless until 2:43 was left. Gonzales scored on a 54-yard touchdown pass that cut the Panther lead to 24-14.
The Panthers’ Jon Shannon bolted up the middle for a 54-yard touchdown run to give the Cats a 31-14 lead at the end of the third quarter.
The teams scored two touchdowns each in the 4th quarter.
