The visiting Taylor Lady Ducks started three sophomores and two freshmen in their game Friday night (Jan. 13) at Liberty Hill against the 9th-ranked Lady Panthers.

That inexperience said it all as LHHS scored a 120-12 victory. Liberty Hill scored what is believed to be a record 51 points in the first quarter in the victory.

Elsewhere in District 25-3A girls’ action on Friday, Burnet beat Lampasas, 60-43, while Salado dumped Llano 65-13. Those results create Tuesday’s big showdown as Liberty Hill takes  its 3-0 district mark to Salado, which is also 3-0 going into the game. Burnet (2-1 in 25-3A) plays at Taylor (0-3) on Tuesday while Lampasas (0-3) visits Llano (1-2).

“We really didn’t expect to score 51 points in first quarter,” Kirschner said on the K-MAC Sports postgame show. “That should have been (the score at the end of the) first half. We just ran some plays and sets in preparation for Salado on Tuesday (from then on).”

Salado, of coruse, ended the Lady Panthers’ season last year, beating LHHS 43-38 in the Region IV quarterfinals – a loss the Lady Panthers have not forgotten.

“Salado will be a different game; we lost to them in the playoffs and (we want revenge),” stated LHHS junior guard Cera Dixon, who tallied three points, two steals, one rebound and one assist against Taylor. “We look forward to that game and look forward to beating them.”

“Salado’s going to be like a Burnet; we’ll probably come out and be tight at the start of the game,” Kirschner added. “I’ve done some different preparations for Salado this year. They (Lady Eagles) focused on (covering Liberty Hill’s) Kourtney (Bevers) last year. We’ll go in with a different game plan Tuesday; we’ll (change up) practice a bit in preparation for Salado.”

LHHS junior post Maddie Metzger had 10 points, eight rebounds, two steals and one assist Friday against Taylor. It was her second game back after surgery.

“I feel much better and glad to be back playing,” stated Metzger, whose sister Stephanie is a senior on the LHHS squad. “(Being away) didn’t affect me too much. Two weeks after the surgery I was back working out again.

“We have to play as a team (Tuesday at Salado) just like we always do. We can’t get down (on ourselves) if we get down or miss some shots.”

The Lady Panthers held leads of 51-0 after the first period and 79-7 at halftime in the lopsided victory.

Senior Jessica Green led LHHS in scoring with 27 points; she added seven steals, six assists and two rebounds. Senior Kourtney Bevers had 24 points, eight steals, six rebounds and six assists. Senior Jordan Redmond had 14 points, nine rebounds, five assists, three steals and three blocked shots.

Senior Taylor Russell tallied 16 points, nine rebounds, three assists and two steals. Senior Macy Floyd scored 16 points and added seven steals, two assists, two blocked shots and one rebound.

Senior Lorrie Potts tallied six points, six steals, six assists and one blocked shot. Senior Chandler Christianson had four points, four assists, one steal and one rebound.

The Lady Panthers played without seniors Stephanie Metzger and Lauren Jackson, who were taking college visits.
