New Year – and a 2011 Top Sports Story

Posted on 27 December 2011 by Chuck Licata

(Merle Bertrand File Photo) Is the 2011 Liberty Hill Panthers Cross Country Team, which won the Bronze Medal at the Class 3A cross country meet in November, the top Liberty Hill Sports Story of 2011?

The only appropriate way to start this column is to say I hope everyone reading it had a wonderful, warm and family-filled Christmas.

And I’m guessing a few of you have loosened your belt buckle a notch, maybe two?

There are certainly plenty of LHHS graduates here in town for the Holidays. Merle Bertrand did a story on 2011 spring grad Ty Dean (see story in this section) and there have been plenty of visitors attending the recent basketball games at The Panthers Den.

If that wasn’t enough there’s plenty of news about former LHHS grads and residents visiting the community online on Facebook! Unless, of course, you’re one of the few like Linda Lattanzio or Merle Rouillard who absolutely don’t believe in Facebook.

If you’d like to share any of your Holiday experiences, we’d love to hear from you. Contact me straight up at chuck@kmacsports.com.

Also, I’ll be coming out with the 4th Annual Liberty Hill Top Sports Story – in case you’re not familiar, the Liberty Hill community that will vote (and determine) the Top Sports Story for 2011. I’ll put up 10 stories for nomination this week and you’ll get the chance to vote for your top story – again, you’ll send your vote to me at my e-mail addy, chuck@kmacsports.com.

Back to basketball: Both varsity squads will be on the road for Holiday tournaments this week. The girls will play in the Wimberley tournament scheduled for Tuesday-through-Thursday; the Lady Panthers play Tuesday at 9 a.m., then again at 3 p.m. Their schedule after that will depend on how they fare in pool play.

Meantime, the Runnin’ Panthers will head to Fredericksburg for a two-day tournament (Tuesday-Wednesday) this week. As of this writing, I don’t have the boys’ tournament schedule just yet. The boys are then off until Jan. 3 while the girls play again Dec. 30 at home against Austin Travis.

Speaking of basketball: We’re right now a little short on our K-MAC Sports broadcast sponsorships. Monroe Williamson and I are working on advertising strategies to solidify the basketball (and upcoming baseball and softball) broadcasts for K-MAC Sports.

Obviously things are still a bit tough although there are signs the economy is coming around. We’ll be working hard to get the broadcasts on the air.

And finally: Here’s wishes for a safe, happy and prosperous New Year for all of you! We appreciate the support, sponsorships, and we certainly appreciate being members of the Liberty Hill community! Cue Jerry Vance: “It’s a great day to be a Panther.”
