(Thunderstruckphotos.com File Photo) Zack Leger rumbled for 89 yards Friday night in a 36-28 upset win at Cuero Friday night. Leger had 69 yards rushing in the second half alone.

The Liberty Hill varsity football team traveled 2 hours south to Cuero and upset the formerly state-ranked Gobblers, 36-28, Friday night at Gobblers Stadium.

The upstart Panthers move to 2-0 on the season while Cuero, which was the 3rd-ranked Class 3A team in the state to start the season, dropped to 0-2. The Gobblers had also lost to Wimberley, 49-42, last week in Zero Week action.

Unofficially, the Panthers rolled up 271 yards on the ground, led by Brandon Corn, Zack Leger, Cody Turner, Johnny Johnston and QB Blake Thompson, who made his first start of the season.

The Panthers kicked 2 field goals in the game (when's the last time that happened for an LHHS team??) and scored on their last three possessions of the first half to take a 12-7 lead into the halftime locker room. Liberty Hill scored on its next possession in the third period, and opened up a 26-14 lead in the fourth. Both teams traded touchdowns late in the game, but the Panthers held the ball for the last 1:11 to seal the upset win.

Liberty Hill hosts China Spring next week at Panthers Stadium.
