"Multi-talented" only just begins to describe Liberty Hill resident Kaye Jackson! Nurse, cosmetologist, realtor, that’s just for starters. But it’s Kaye’s unique artistic talents that are the focus of this article, talents that have flourished over the years with lessons that serve to bring out her true creativity that includes, but is definitely not limited to her beautiful oil paintings.
In 1980, Kaye was ready to learn something new and took her very first art class. The instructor told her that all he needed was six weeks and it would be in her blood forever. Whether Kaye believed him or not, it sure turned out to be true. Since then she has taken classes by many famous artists; Johnnie Liliedahl, Mike Windberg, Rosemary West, and Ginger Edwards to mention just a few of the hundreds of classes. Why? Because there is always something new to learn when it comes to painting.
Over time Kaye has created hundreds of oil paintings, most of which have been sold. Her style is generally realistic, painting from still life and photos which usually involves special orders. To ensure color harmony and balance in a painting, Kaye uses a limited palate and mixes most of her paints.
Also included in Kaye’s collection of artistic skills is the painting of murals using a 3-D technique called Trompe L’oeil, a French word that means ‘to fool the eye.’ And it sure does! Where you think there’s a hand-carved niche to display a statue or vase, or an ornate banister with carved balusters, are really paintings!
On once occasion when Kaye returned from a one-week art expo, one of those where if you are not sleeping or eating, you are working on art, God gave her a project - turn the garage into an art studio! Thirty minutes after she mentioned it to her husband Gary, he was at the local hardware store getting the materials together for the big conversion. What took him so long?
Three weeks later, Kaye had her own studio and she quickly made good use of it. An artist she was taking lessons from lost her studio in Georgetown and now uses it for her classes. Kaye also gives lessons, some of which will start up soon. One will be a class for beginners to learn about the different kinds of brushes, colors, and how to prep a canvas. Other classes include advanced oil, tole painting (acrylic), and pen & ink drawing. If you are interested in taking art classes in a friendly, caring atmosphere, you can give her a call at 512-577-5706.
Another important aspect of Kaye’s artistic talents lies in framing. The only thing she won’t frame is needlework. But she has framed everything from certificates, photos, paintings, to a solder’s dress uniform coat from the /Spanish-American War that included his diary and wallet. She has also framed antique bicycle posters that had been hidden underground during Hitler’s reign. A wide variety of frames and mattes are available to choose from.
